Resurrection Church
Westend

Chair of Spatial Art and Lighting Design

The ressurection church along with the new building and the Ledigenheim, forms the center of Westen. The existing urban situation is simplified by removing all unnecessary elements through subtraction. The volume of the new building is cut on the side facing the church to give it maximum exposure. The water feature connects the two building volumes and creates a strong overall presence.
The church is reduced to its primary spaces. The west facade opens up generously towards the square, bringing openness and light into the space. A stage with functional rooms is placed in the side nave and can be used for both the main space and the outdoor area. The apse remains as the altar space, preserving the religious character of the room.
The new building on the ground floor and first floor houses the events and administration of the new community center. The community hall faces the church, is two stories high, and can be expanded with a group room. The facade has an urban orientation towards the street sides and incorporates typologies found in the surrounding area. The slanted side is extensively glazed, allowing rainwater to flow directly into the water feature.
